The Weeknd

Abel Makkonen Tesfaye was born February 16, 1990 in Ontario Canada to mother and father Makkonen and Samra Tesfaye- who are both of Ethopian descent. We all know Abel as none other than The Weeknd. The Weeknd is known for his slow tempos, rumbling bass, and forlorn echoe songs. At a tender age The Weeknd’s parents split and he was raised in Scarborough with his mother and grandmother. Unfortunately The Weeknd never really got the opportunity to have his father in his life once his parents split. He stated that (and i ) “I saw him vaguely when I was six, and then again when I was 11 or 12, and he had a new family and kids. I don’t even know where he lived — I’d see him for, like, a night. I’m sure he’s a great guy. I never judged him. He wasn’t abusive, he wasn’t an alcoholic, he wasn’t an asshole. He just wasn’t there.” And, at only 11 years old The Weeknd started smoking weed but later moved to hard drugs such as  ecstasy, oxycodone, Xanax, cocaine, psilocybin (mushroom), and ketamine. He was able to enable his unhealthy lifestyle by shoplifting. Attending  West Hill Collegiate Institute and Birchmount Park Collegiate Institute The Weeknd became a high school dropout in 2007 leaving home to live in Parkdale, Toronto. The Weeknd stated that he got his stage name (and I quote) “after [he] left one weekend and never came home”, however Jermy Rose claims that he was the one who thought of the idea. Jeremy Rose came into The Weeknd’s life in 2010 and is a producer he collabed with him on 3 songs “What You Need”, “Loft Music ”, and “The Morning”  which Rose states was a dark R&B genre. Subsequently The Weeknd dropped all 3 songs on YouTube late that same year and gained the attention of rapper Drake.  With Drake by his side The Weeknd became the opening act for his Canada performances.

Over the summer of 2011, The Weeknd contributed to four songs on Drake’s Take Care Album, both as a writer and a featured artist. In April of  2012, The Weeknd began his first tour of the United States, with a performance at the Coachella Festival. With his first positive tour in the set The Weeknd initiated a European Tour which also received positive feedback. In June, The Weeknd’s Balloons Trilogy was revealed to have been downloaded over 8 million times and in September of that year he signed to Republic Records  in a joint venture with his own imprint XO. Upon the signing, his compilation album Trilogy was released and hit  #4 on the Billboards top 200 and #5  on the Canadian Albums Chart. In May of 2013 Trilogy was  certified platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) and double-platinum by Music Canada. On September of 2013 Weeknd’s Kiss Land album was released and landed at #2 on the Billboards Top 200. And for those of us that didn’t know, The Weeknd also contributed one of his soundtracks- Devil May Cry to The Hunger Games:  Catching Fire. And who can forget Fifty Shades of Grey…..yea I know the movie does the book no justice but The Weeknd also contributed his “Earned It” single to the movie- the same was #3 on the Billboards 100.

On September 8, The Weeknd became the first male artist to have simultaneously held the top three spots on the Billboard Hot R&B Songs chart, with the three singles that preceded the release of his album which all went platinum in the U.S. Throughout his music career The Weeknd has teamed up with some of the biggest artists including- Kanye West, Beyonce, Kendrick Lamar, Future, Alicia Keys, Meek Mills and Travis Scott to name a few. As for his personal life The Weeknd has dated model Bella Hadid in 2015 and again in 2018. He also dated singer and actress Selena Gomez, though for only a few months before the 2 split. As for legal issues in January 2015, The Weeknd was arrested for punching a Las Vegas police officer. His charge was 50 hours of community service after pleading no contest. He has also been sued for alleged plagiarism.

As a philanthropist he has given back in more ways than one by donating $50,000 to the University of Toronto, $100,000 to  Suubi Health Center, a maternity and children’s medical facility in Budondo, Uganda. He has also helped in the raising of funds to aid in the current pandemic. The Weeknd’s achievements include winning three Grammy Awards, eight Billboard Music Awards, two American Music Awards, nine Juno Awards, and has been nominated for one Academy Award.
